Flying Upside Down means, literally, flying a plane upside down aerobatically. It also means turning fear upside down by engaging and controlling it rather than succumbing to it and letting it control your life. As a kid, the author wanted to fly. But a terrible accident made him deathly afraid of heights, so much so that he couldn’t even ride in an elevator, let alone fly in a plane. Later in life, he overcame this dysfunctional mindset by turning the fear upside down and becoming a pilot.

This book relates the author’s thrills, chills, ups and downs (literally), and his successes and screw-ups as he evolves into an experienced flyer who tests the limits of himself and his aircraft in some of the most challenging planes and situations imaginable – from flying a barely airworthy Cessna over the Pacific waters in Guam, aerobatics, parachuting, and some of the toughest mountain flying in the Colorado Rockies.

Throughout the book, there are many useful lessons the author learned through his flying adventures that are instructive for pilots and non-pilots alike in dealing with life’s challenges, overcoming fear and building self esteem and confidence… for life!

"This author has much of value to offer about both learning to fly and overcoming one's fears in the process, a story he has earned the right to tell in his balanced and sometimes comic way. His well-paced and crafted narrative is actually several related stories. His introduction to the techno-world of flying, describing the learning environments of night and mountain training as well as the various aircraft and the cultural milieu of the pilots, is the best I have ever read. There is both action and comedy in this book; but the author also writes of his inner emotional journey where he shares experiences ranging from his time as a Marine in Vietnam to project work in the polished halls of the prestigious Booz Allen Hamilton consulting firm where he Traveled to far off Micronesia. The powerful take-home message is one of courage and persistence, where the author overcomes his fears, providing insights about relationships as well as the process of learning to fly. I highly recommend this book. Dan Guenther, Marine Veteran, Vietnam, 1968-1970"

  • First, I am not a big fan of self-help type books but because Hall's first book was a novel about Viet Nam -" Marines Never Cry", I read it as I have former Viet Nam vets in the family. I witnessed the type of negativism applied to returning vets and the impact.
Then I had a notification about Flying Upside Down. My biggest fear has been flying. I tried to overcome this by flying a few times and the panic attacks got worse and worse finally culminating with an almost knock down drag out confrontation trying to depart a plane while delayed at the gate. Even offering to get arrested if that's what it took. I just gave up and took other means of transportation to get where I wanted.
Hall's recollections of his determination to learn about flying, overcoming the challenges of many modes of flying was very readable. The only problem I had was a lot of detail about the planes and technical aspects of his experiences. I don't know diddly about these so it took a bit of time to get through the reading trying to understand.
What I liked best were the stories and experiences along the way. They were personal and full of life lessons, both serious and with pithy humor. So, in all, what I took away from the book were lessons of decision making, prioritizing and learning to overcome my fears one at a time instead of letting it all paralyze me with total inaction which made my life worse.
I may not totally give up my hesitation to fly but I don't make excuses about it and accept for now that it is more or less at the bottom of my list of personal challenges. The life lessons I am learning, even at my age, are due to Hall's excellent book.
  • FLYING UPSIDE DOWN รข€“Commentary

Once again Tim Hall gives us a very human insight into recognizing and dealing with emotions that severely limit and threaten our existence, like fear. In his award-winning Marines Never Cry, he takes us with him as he endures and survives combat fear in Vietnam. In Flying Upside Down he lets us share his confrontation and mastery of his fear of heights by learning to fly. We share his cockpit and see his fears subside as he takes us on many flights all over the world. Masterful and inspirational. Robert Fischer, author of The Miracle Workers of South Boulder Road
