The story of Margaret and her friend the Pope continues with Book 3 in The Pope’s Cat series.
This latest adventure has Margaret experiencing the prayers, penitence, liturgy, and excitement of Holy Week in the Vatican and Rome—from the joy of Palm Sunday in St. Peter's Square, to foot-washing in a Roman prison, the solemnity of Good Friday, and the expectation of Easter.
She learns about Jesus and the meaning of his Passion, visits important new places such as The Sistine Chapel, where she seems to pray beside the Pope, and the Roman Colosseum, where she learns that many early Christians were martyrs for their faith. Margaret's friends, the Swiss Guards, are watching over her, and she manages to eat (she still loves to eat!) some interesting foods, even though it's Holy Week. Oh yes, and she sleeps a lot.

- If you’ve ever wished you could spend Holy Week at St. Peter’s and the Vatican, this is the book for you! Written for the young and young at heart, Sweeney’s latest chapter in the Margaret series takes us into the Vatican during the holiest week of the year, Holy Week. As readers walk alongside Margaret the awesome cat (the Pope’s pet and special friend!), we witness the unfolding of Holy Week and the various liturgies and celebrations. The book is quick and accessible, but also packed with learning opportunities. Sweeney effortlessly introduces not only beautiful liturgical traditions, but also teaches us words in Italian, Latin and Spanish. We get a glimpse inside the Sistine Chapel and learn the history of Michaelangelo’s artwork. One of my favorite aspects of this work is that it takes liturgies that sometimes can be either long and overwhelming or even scary for children, and places them in positive, loving context. (Remember this when you see what Margaret does on Holy Thursday!). The illustrations are so beautiful and this is a book that will have you and your favorite young readers actually looking forward to the beauty of Holy Week (and perhaps also craving pizza!) Enjoy!
