Bestselling memoirist and psychotherapist Kerry Cohen (Loose Girl A Memoir of Promiscuity) explores complicated female friendships in Girl Trouble. Beginning with her relationship with her sister Tyler Cohen, who illustrates the memoir, Kerry examines the many ways female friendships can affect a girl’s life. From bullying and failed friendships to competition and painful break ups, Girl Trouble brings forth a story of how one girl learned to navigate the many difficulties of feminine friendships. Girls and women everywhere will relate to the confusion, the hurt feelings, and they will also learn along with Kerry how to make better choices over the years.

"Kerry Cohen's books affect me like no other writer's. Ten years ago I read LOOSE GIRL and was struck by its uniqueness and deeply personal topic. No one was writing about teenage promiscuity like that, so authentic, unerring and on point. Now she's done it again with a book about female friendships.
I wasn't excited about GIRL TROUBLE, at first, to be honest. The subject matter could never hold my interest...or so I thought. I don't spend much time pondering or longing for female friendships for the same reason Cohen does—childhood experiences set me up for painful awkward failings in that arena, until I threw in the towel. Cohen kept trying and the story she tells through this string of vignettes caused me no end of flashbacks. Once again, I am transported to my teens in the 1980s, awash in the same self-doubt and isolation countless teen girls felt (and thought they were alone in).
I read GIRL TROUBLE cover to cover in one sitting (after pausing halfway through the Preface to absorb her exquisite sentences). If parental relationships shape our attachment style as adults, childhood friendships help define who we are (or derail who we planned to become). Stories from summer camp and about class bullies are painfully relatable, but they're less about the cast of characters than how these relationships shaped Cohen's understanding of herself. Like with LOOSE GIRL it's a topic few authors are writing about, and even fewer this well."

If parental relationships shape our attachment style as adults, childhood friendships help define who we are (or derail who we planned to become). Stories from summer camp and about class bullies are painfully relatable, but they're less about the cast of characters than how these relationships shaped Cohen's understanding of herself. Like with LOOSE GIRL it's a topic few authors are writing about, and even fewer this well. - Kerry Cohen is a phenomenal writer. Her voice is consistently honest, clear, and engaging. I've read several of Kerry's books, and every time I feel like I'm sitting down with a good friend. Girl Trouble is no exception.
I began reading Girl Trouble and found myself nodding and thinking, "Yes! I felt that too!" and "OMG, my Tiffany did the same thing...only her name was Carrie," and, I must admit, a third of the way through the book, I put it down and had a good cry. Kerry's girl troubles resonate so vividly, and I found it both painful and refreshing to read through her friendship experiences that explore so cogently the complexities of growing up "girl."
One of the things I most appreciate about Kerry's books is her willingness to share what most of us have long since buried, her ability to open herself up and lay bare the the truths most of us aren't brave enough to confront. Kerry's gift is her ability to share boldly and transparently and to offer healing for every girl/woman who has been subject to hurt and shame.
The illustrations by Tyler Cohen are incredible! Fantastic graphics! I thought her illustrations lent an added complexity of both levity and depth, depending on circumstance. It was really cool to pair the drawings with Kerry's words as I was reading.
If I was pressed to consider an aspect of the book that didn't work as well for me, I would say that there were a couple of vignettes that felt slightly out of sync to me in terms of organization. I'm sure, however, it was my misinterpretation of what the author was trying to convey that made it seem that way.
Overall Loved, loved, loved this book! Highly recommend that every girl who has ever had a friendship with another girl read this from beginning to end. - Cohen dominates the art of candor, and this book is no exception. I began the book feeling like I'd recognize some of the mean girls I met along the way and left realizing that my own thoughtless remarks have probably hurt my own dear friends. Eye-opening. An effective mirror into the powerful relationships between women. Highly recommended.
- honest writing. a great read.
